Google's AdSense Gets a New, More Efficient Look

Google has unveiled a new interface to its AdSense service for Web publishers that the company says is easier to use and adds a number of control and management features.

The updated AdSense is being rolled out today -- in more than 30 languages -- to AdSense publishers in the more than 200 countries in which it's available.

Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) said it made three key improvements to AdSense in the areas of reporting, control over ads and access to earnings and payment information.

"With this new interface, AdSense is even easier to use, and we're also providing publishers with all the tools they need to manage and increase their advertising revenue," Jonathan Bellack, Director of Product Management for AdSense, said in a blog post. "We used lots of direct feedback from our publishers to make this overhaul."

On the reporting front, Google said it now includes more options for publishers to "slice and dice" data, so they can get a quick view which ads are working -- and which ones aren't.

Google also said it's easier for publishers to control which ads and advertisers they want to appear on their sites. For example, Google moved all the ad controls to one place, on the Allow and Block Ads tab where publishers can filter ads from specific advertisers, categories and ad networks.

Lastly, on the payments front, Google said it's now easier to get quick access to earnings and payment information, and it streamlined the process of running reports and finding relevant features and help, as well as to make account changes.

"Our engineers have spent countless hours making sure that the interface is stable and blazing [sic] fast," said Bellack.

AdSense product manager Rahul Bafna said that publishers he's met with around the world had one clear message; "Data is king. As a result, the new interface lets you slice and dice your data by ad size, ad type or targeting with clear, easy-to-read graphs."

Bafna and other members of the AdSense team, commented on the new release in a YouTube video at the Inside AdSense blog.

For those of you that live in the US may know that there was a huge UFC heavyweight bout this past weekend, Brock Lesnar vs Randy Couture. I figured that there would be a lot of traffic searching for this video for free. I simply found a photo of Brock Lesnar during one of his fights and used Windows Movie Maker to watermark the image.

I made the video about 2min long. The thumbnail showed the still image obviously so that people will think that it is the actual fight. The watermark read “View the full fight @ mywebsite.com” Of course in my info I had the my website link. It went something like this:

Title was Brock Lesnar vs Randy Couture FULL FIGHT

OK now the tricky part on mywebsite.com I built a simple page with an image of a video player as if it was an embedded video. The title of the page was Brock Lesnar vs. Randy Couture FULL FIGHT. I put other info on the page to make it look legit like views: 4848 below the view image left different comments ex. Thanks for the full fight/ Brock is an animal etc. Just to add to the legit feel of the video page.

Right above the video image and the are the words “Click video to play” The video image is actually a hyperlink to those in window popups. The popup has a message “Sorry you need to install this toolbar to view this video” the word toolbar is hyperlinked to my aff program. I get a couple bucks for every download. Do to the high volume of searches for the fight this has been working very well for me.

Now you don’t have to necessarily wait for big events for this to be profitable there are events every week. You could upload trailers of new movie releases and use the same method. Also you do not need to use a toolbar you could change the popup to read “Please submit your email here inorder to view video” or zipcode or whatever.

Also to boost your conversions if you have youtube commenting capabilities comment your video with comments like Thanks for the video/Wow thank for the complete xxwhateverxx etc. People will jump on the bandwagon and increase your conversions.

For one of my domain created one and a half months back, I was ranking good for specific searches. Say if I have reviewed any product, if you search for that product, I rank in the first page. Fair enough, but that does not bring massive traffic because I never did review based on product popularity, instead I just review what I find on my way and that too with no affiliate link and optimized only for adsense (getting 25% CTR ).

Lets be more specific, my domain relates to ‘Make money online’ and ‘Work from home’ and say I reviewed for website like ’sponsoredreviews’, ‘payperpost’, ‘mylot’ etc. So if anyone search for these keyword, I always come in first page. I was quite satisfied because its a month old blog. But the click what I was getting is 100/day which was too dull for me. And for the main keyword like ‘Make Money online’ ‘Work from home’, ‘Home based business’. ‘make money guide, I was not ranking in the Top 100 (You know how competitive this keyword is)… And I did something which made my page to come in Top 50 in the first attempt and Top 10 in second attempt. Traffic surged from 100 /day to 3400/day on an average

I dont know if I can call it blackhat, but definitely not a white. Give a try for instant result….

what I did:

(1) I modified .htaccess file. At the bottom, I added

RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /

RewriteRule ^(.+)$ / [R=302,L]

What it does is, it forward all the internal pages to homepage.. You type anything http://www.yourdomain.com/****/****.html and it will come to www.yourdomain.com

(2) Added one plain HTML page in root directory named ‘index.html’

(3) Edited that index.html like this

a) Title – Your 2 anchor keyword
b) In the body, 2 lines of text filled with your main keyword in

tag
c) Search your keyword in google and pick any 3 result from top 10 result and copy the first para of each article
d) make this copied article in Bold
e) Add

tag with your first Keyword
f) go to keyword tool in adword and type your main keyword and see all the relevant keyword coming into result. Note any 10 result (two short keyword, two 3/4 word keyword, six long tail keywords) and add these keywords under

tag defined above and keep it in

tag
g) Now repeat the steps (e) and (f) for your second Keyword (anchor text)

(4) Ping your blog through pingler and pingthatblog
(5) Leave it for a day
(6) after 24 hours, remove that added line in .htaccess file and rename or delete index.html file added into the root directory

How to Get Them to Click Your AdSense Ad

There must be 100 books (eBooks and otherwise) on how to "cash in" on Google's AdSense program. Many are what may be termed "black hat" ways to gain revenue. Black hat comes from the old western movies where the good guys had white hats and the bad guys, you guessed it, had black hats.

Interestingly enough, the guys making big bucks in AdSense don't stoop to those tactics. They don't need to.

So if you are looking here for a way to create a gimmick on a page to make people click an ad they would not normally, you won't find it. That's against the Google AdSense Terms of Service.

But there must be ways to better your Click Through Rate, no?

Let's look at a few things that have been proven to "improve" your chances.

I am blessed to live in Naples, Florida. A few days ago I walked to the beach (a few minutes from my front door), and took the picture of the fisherman.

Although it's beautiful, the fisherman is frustrated. Several factors were working against him on this day without a bite. The biggest thing was the effect "Red tide" has had on our fish. To date, over 450 tons of dead fish have been taken to the local landfill.

So right off the bat, the "content" he is fishing in isn't good. In other words, yes, fish are out there, but they are being choked by the algae bloom. Nothing would interest them right now.

Next, I wandered over and asked what bait was he using. He said shrimp. Now shrimp can be good, and I'm not expert on Gulf fishing, but he wasn't getting any bites at all. Might be time to spruce up the bait a little.

We'll call proper bait the "ad size and placement" in our analogy.

I've seen many fisherman at our pier fish for hours with shrimp and not catch a thing. My thinking is the fish just want something else. They are probably blinded by shrimp bait because everyone uses it.

But the biggest factor with our fisherman is that the overall content was absolutely deadly. The fish didn't want to be there and indeed, many were dying to get out.

So how can we get them to bite at your ads?

First - Don't force the ads to look like ads. I have seen countless, and am sure you have, too; countless pages with Google AdSense ads that are the Google default. Remember that Google provides you with tools to make your AdSense look awesome. The best tip: blend the ads in with your page. Make them appear as an integral part of your site.

Second - Use text ads and not image ads. Text blends better. Fish are blind to the same ol' bait. We are blind to banner ads. Don't go there - your visitors certainly won't.
Third - and lastly for today, create awesome content. Don't give your visitors the "red tide". Keep searching for content and make it of value. Some great sites offering free content are: ArticleCity.com, ValuableContent.com, and EzineArticles.com.

Enough for now. Work on making your ads blend with your pages. Concentrate on delivering great content. That's what draws people to your site. And your AdSense Ads will reflect the content as well. Isn't that what you want?

I often get asked what the secret is to making money with Google's AdSense program. This often comes from people who are dreaming of setting up websites chock full of high-paying keywords for particular niche subjects and then sitting back and watching the money roll in. "What's the magic formula?" they ask me.

The only AdSense formula that you need to know is this:

earnings = number of clicks * average price per click

This is what I call the Fundamental AdSense Formula because you can derive almost every AdSense "secret" directly or indirectly from this formula. Do you want to earn more with AdSense? You have two ways of doing it:

Increase the number of clicks, and/or
Increase the average price per click

Your earnings will only go up if you do one or the other, and ideally both. It's an obvious formula, yes, but it's amazing how many people lose sight of it in their quest for increased AdSense earnings.

Increasing the Number of AdSense Clicks

Increasing the number of times the ads on your site or blog are clicked is the most obvious strategy. There are two general strategies you can follow:

Increase the traffic to the site, and/or
Adjust the ads to make them more "clickable"

Getting traffic is hard and takes time, so don't look at it as a quick fix. The best way to get traffic is to provide useful, unique content and to rank highly in search engine rankings for keywords related to that content. In other words, use standard search engine optimization techniques. DO NOT "buy" traffic or use "link farms" or other dubious techniques. Other tips for getting traffic:

Publish articles, even free ones, with links back to your site.
Include a link to your site in the signature at the bottom of your emails or in any forum postings you make (if the forum allows it).
Participate in forums/groups related to the content of your site or blog. The key is to participate, not lurk, and don't just post messages promoting your site.
Add comments (relevant ones only, please) to other blogs, you can usually link back to yours. (This won't help your search engine rankings, but it may allow others who are reading those comments to find your own site.)
Syndicate your content (trivial if you have a blog) and make sure that the content is registered with syndication aggregators.
List your site in relevant directories.

Adjusting the ads is something you can do almost immediately:

Position the ads on the page in order to make them more noticeable. Google even publishes a helpful heat map for AdSense publishers.
Choose the best AdSense ad format that works for your site.
Change the ad colors either to make the ads blend in with your site or to make them stand out. Again, it varies depending on the site.

Whatever you do, DO NOT ENTICE VISITORS TO CLICK THE ADS. Google is very strict about this, see the AdSense program policies for the details.

Increasing the Average AdSense Price Per Click

Increasing the average price per click you receive from AdSense is the other strategy for increasing your overall AdSense earnings. You can do this by:

Carefully targeting your content, and/or
Filtering out and avoiding low-paying ads

Content targeting isn't just about creating relevant, unique content. It's also making sure that that content is written to target the higher-paying keywords associated with a given topic. This means:

Figuring out which keyword variations for that topic pay more. Often the more specialized variations and phrases pay more than the "generic" terms.
Ensuring that the keyword density of the content favors the higher-paying keyword variations.

And to reduce the occurrence of lower-paying ads, consider these two strategies:

Use AdSense's competitive filter mechanism to screen out the ads that you don't want.
Show fewer ads on a page. The fewer ads you show, the more the higher-paying ads get displayed and clicked.

Many publishers also report that their earnings increase if they remove ads completely from pages with few or no clicks. Again, the "less is more" strategy favors the higher-paying ads.

There's No Magic

As you can see, there's no magic involved to increasing your AdSense earnings. The Fundamental AdSense Formula is easy to understand, but that doesn't mean it's easy to apply the formula. It takes time and effort to do it, just like most things.

Myth: Google Is Trigger-Happy At Banning Adsense Plublishers

There is a common complaint among webmasters Google is trigger-happy at banning Adsense publishers who violate their Terms Of Service (TOS), and often without warning.

The TOS violations usually involve:

1) Color code your ads to match your web site palette *exactly*. Don't use frames around your ads. Instead, in the AdSense code generation interface, make sure you choose the same color as your page background for the ad frame and the ad background.

When choosing the ad heading colors, match them to the *exact* color of your page headings. Use the exact same ad background shade as your page background. Use the exact same ad text font and color as the text on your pages. 2) Try not to use the traditional horizontal banner style or leaderboard image ads because people are blind to them.

4) Research competitive keywords using a keyword research tool such as Keyword Discovery at http://www.keyworddiscovery.com/?id=22487 or grab a list of the most popular keywords from various sources and use them in your web site pages where relevant. - 1 horizontal 4 link ad unit towards the top of the page under the first paragraph.
- 1 vertical skyscraper text ad unit about halfway down the left hand side under "Sponsor Links".

- 1 horizontal text banner unit at the bottom of the page with images above each ad to draw attention to them.

You can also include 1 AdSense referral button in addition to the 3 other units.

9) Tailor your page content to a particular niche or focus. Page content that is tailored towards a specific theme is more likely to trigger AdWords ads that closely match the content and are therefore more likely to interest your visitors and inspire them to click.

Don't create pages merely for the sake of placing AdSense ads. Visitors (and search engines) can see through this ruse in an instant.

How to Increase Your Google Adsense CTR

This is the first part of two series of articles about How to Increase Your Google Adsense CTR. Many people think that they just have to copy and paste Google Adsense code into their website and start earning a huge amount of money from it. What a huge mistake! I also thought the same way two years ago. Later I realized that without optimization, that's impossible. Here I will share all of the tricks to increase my Google Adsense CTR that I found within the last two years.

Here are some tips to increase your Google Adsense CTR:

Make sure the ads that are appearing on your site are closely related with your content. This is the first thing you have to do because if your ads are not relevant, there's small possibility that people will click on them. Then, what should you do to tackle this problem? Here are the tips:
- Create a keyword rich content. I suggest you creating one topic a page.
- Check your keyword rich content and then mark some of your keywords as bold or italic. But don't do it too much, just do it 1 â€“ 2 times per page. Otherwise, Google assumes you are doing spamming.
- Use your keyword in your page title.
- Use HTML Tag H1 as your content title, and put your keyword in it. Don't forget to place this tag at the beginning of your content.
- If all those tips still do not work, there is just one possibility: there are no ads that matched with your keyword! You can check this out by using this marvelous tool from the Digital Point Website. It is called the Google Adsense Sandbox, and located in http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/Adsense-sandbox/
  You'll be asked to enter your selected keyword and it will display every Adsense ads that's connected with that keyword. What if your suspicion is correct? Change your keyword! Do not worry; sometimes you just have to change one or two words.
Use wide ads (336x280, 300x250 or 250x250). Because these are the best performing ads.
Blend your ads with your website themes. For example, if your background color is white, change your ads border and background color to white as well. If your background color is dark (black), use bright color such as yellow as link color. This will decrease user ad-blindness.
Place your Google Adsense in these positions:
- Above the fold
  Above the fold is the top position of your page that's visible without your visitor having to scroll down. This is the best location that works for me. I place 336x280 ad unit in this location and it works very well. Why? Okay, back to our example. Your article is about "how to bake delicious bread". Someone finds it from search engine; when he opens it, he first sees ads about "baking school", "baking book" or "bread recipes". Who won't be interested?
- In the middle of an article.
  This works well if your article is long (more than 500 words). People tend to stop for a while and look for something different while they read. I suggest using rectangular ads (125x125, 180x150, 300x250, 336x280, 250x250 ad unit) for this purpose and make it left justified.
- At the end of an article.
  Many people reported that placing Google Adsense ads at the end of their article tends to work very well. This is because when people finish reading an interesting article, they usually think "okay, what's next?" That's your chance! By placing Google Adsense ads at the end of this article, people will spend a minute to read it and then (maybe) click it. For example, you write an article about "how to bake delicious bread". And at the end of it, there are some ads about "bread recipes". Who won't be interested?
Regarding the fourth tip, I don't recommend you placing three ad units in a single page. From my experience, the number of ad unit you place in a single page doesn't affect your CTR. In fact, I even found that placing three text ads in a single page make my ads "unblended". For example, I put 160x600, 468x60 and 336x280 ads on a single page. You know what? My 468x60 ads only showed 3 ads in it, whereas my 336x280 ads only showed 2 ads in it! My suggestion is: use 1 â€“ 2 ad unit and a single link unit on your page (Google allows 3 ad unit and 1 link unit to be placed on a single page).
Always use Link Unit! Many people never realize that Link Unit is the most profitable format if put in the right place. Try to place it near your navigation menu. People will misidentify it as a navigation menu and automatically read it. If your ads are closely relevant to your content, there's big possibility they will click it. I move the top navigation in one of my websites to the bottom section and replace it with 728x15 Link Unit Ads. You know what? My Google Adsense CTR increased by 200%!

How to Avoid Having Your AdSense Accout Banned for Click Fraud

If you trawl through the AdSense message boards you canâ€™t help but come across tales of woe from AdSense publishers that have had their account banned by Google.

Below is a list of ways people have been banned from AdSense and information on how to avoid it happening to you.

Donâ€™t click on your own ads

The obvious one but still people do it. Google has the IP address of the computer/s that youâ€™ve used to create and check your AdSense account. If it sees that this IP address clicks one of your ads youâ€™re in trouble.

Donâ€™t do it. Itâ€™s theft. Not from Google but from the AdWords advertisers.

If you want to go to a site advertised by one of your ads donâ€™t click on it look at the URL of the advertising site at the bottom of the ad and type it into your browser.

If you click on one accidentally (which does happen) youâ€™re probably be ok but itâ€™s worth dropping a quick email to Google with an explanation and apology

Donâ€™t log in to AdSense from a shared computer.

As I said above Google keeps a record of every machine IP address used to look at your account. If you check your stats on a machine then someone else clicks on your ads from the same machine Google sees this as click fraud. Worth bearing in mind when thinking of checking your stats from somewhere like an Internet CafÃ©.

Donâ€™t log in to your AdSense account from work.

Apart from getting in trouble with the company that employs you thereâ€™s also a further real risk. Most companies use a proxy server to access the Internet. A proxy server with ONE IP ADDRESS. Therefore you checking your ads from work means this proxy IP address being recorded by Google as one that you use. Problem is if there are 1000 people in your company it is the same IP address for them too. Google canâ€™t differentiate between you and the other 999 employees in your company. If one of these 999 clicks on one of your ads itâ€™s ban time.

Donâ€™t get into a â€˜Iâ€™ll click your ads if you click mineâ€™ agreement with another Webmaster.

As above Google will have your IP address and that of every AdSense publisher. If they see these IP addresses consistently clicking on each other ads itâ€™s goodbye for both of you.

Donâ€™t tell friends and family.

Telling friends and family about your money making websites can lead to problems. Even if you tell them not to click on your ads thereâ€™s always the chance that Auntie Maud will think itâ€™s a good idea to make some extra money for her favourite nephew. 100 clicks later from the same visitor and your account is screaming â€˜Click Fraudâ€™.

Receiving clicks from illegal traffic

Check the AdSense TOS for sources of traffic that arenâ€™t allowed by Google. These include methods like Traffic exchange, PTC advertising, Auto surf etc.

Do monitor your visitor and AdSense figures

Check your account at least once a day. If you see a massive spike coupled with a massive increase in Page CTR investigate using your visitor stats website. If you see itâ€™s all come from the same IP address you could have been the victim of a malicious attack â€“ inform Google via email and offer them access to your logs.

So let's go through some tricks that will enable you to look deeper into your competition's link profile granting you access to the restricted areas: their locker room, dirty laundry and even the briefing hall where they plan their link building strategies.

Let's Talk Competitive Link Research

Finding out where your competitors' links come from is not all that hard. You just go to Yahoo! or Google and type in link:www.your-competitor.com to get a list of inbound links to the site.

Yahoo's much better in that respect as it tends to give more extensive and accurate data. The problem here is that there's a limit of 1,000 links per website which is often not enough as the fattest link sources get left behind the limit fence. Here're some tips to break through to the other side.

Note: If you're lazy like me skip to the end of the article where I'll share a tool that does it all much quicker.

Trick 1: Search for Links to Particular Web Pages of a Competing Site

Alongside with link:www.your-competitor.com search for

link:www.your-competitor.com/products.html or
link:www.your-competitor.com/services.html

and so on.

Trick 2: Exclude Internal Links

You may examine the internal linking structure of your competition if you want to gain some insight on their navigation and marketing steps. But as we want to find more external links, let's exclude the internal ones.

You can do this by adding -site:site.com operator to your search query. Type in:

link:http://www.your-competitor.com -site:your-competitor.com or
linkdomain:www.your-competitor.com -site:your-competitor.com

and you'll get a list of external backlinks only.

There's a dropdown option in Yahoo! site explorer that does the same.

Trick 3: Exclude Links Coming from Certain Domains

The -site: modifier lets you exclude links coming from specific sites. So, whenever you see a large chunk of links coming from the same domain add -site:thisdomain.com modifier to your query and the links from this site will get replaced with new ones.

You can add -site: multiple times in one query so that you have something like this:

link:http://www.cnn.com -site:cnn.com -site:en.wikipedia.org

Trick 4: Check Links Coming from Certain TLDs

This is a little known trick. The site: modifier actually lets you get a list of links coming from domains with certain TLDs: .com, .org, .edu, .co.uk and so on. Just type in

link:http://www.your-competitor.com site:.gov or
linkdomain:www.your-competitor.com site:.gov

and you'll get a list of .gov sites linking to your rival.

Note: Do this in Yahoo! regular search, not site explorer

Trick 5: Exclude Links Coming from Certain TLDs

This is an even lesser known trick. You can exclude certain TLDs from the results with the -site:.tld modifier. Usually the biggest chunk of links comes from .com's so add a -site.com modifier and you'll get lots of new link data.

Trick 6: Use Different Combinations of the First 5 Tricks

Try link:http://www.your-competitor.com/page.html -site:your-competitor.com -site:.com
Or link:http://www.your-competitor.com site:.org -site:wikipedia.org

Trick 7: Use the Above 6 Tricks in Different Search Engines

Don't limit your searches to Yahoo! and Google, go to AltaVista, Alexa, (Bing doesn't give you link data, so forget about it) but then there're Exalead, Excite and tons of regional search engines. Search them, get rid of the the duplicates and you'll have a goooooooooooooooogol of competitor's links to study.

Note: Some search engines have a different set of operators so you'll need to type domain: instead of link:.

Getting It All Done Fast

This sure seems like a lot of work and it is. Moreover, getting the links list is only the beginning and the easy part of competitive link research. Once you get the list you need to analyze each link, weed out poor quality sites and only leave the ones you can get a link from. Now THAT's a lot of work.

I'm too lazy to do this all by hand, besides I value my time too much to waste it on such kind of work. That's why I use SEO SpyGlass an advanced link analysis tool that employs all the tricks described in this article (plus some more advanced ones I don't even know) to get up to 25,000 links per domain, which is much, much more than any other tool can get.

SEO SpyGlass also finds all the data I need to analyze the links:

• Google PR of the domain and linking page
• The URL and title of the linking page
• The anchor text and description
• Whether the link is still on the page (sometimes the link gets removed but search engines will
think it's there till they reindex the page).
• Whether the link is no-follow or dofollow
• How many other links are on the page
• How much link value the link passes
• And some other data like TLDs, domain age, country, etc.

Imagine your cell phone as a mini marketing machine. As you head into your car after dinner, a text alert pops onto the screen of your handset announcing the 9 p.m. lineup at a nearby cineplex. You choose the Jodi Foster flick "The Brave One," and a promo video for the next Warner Bros. release, a George Clooney movie, starts running. Afterward, more text appears, prompting you to launch the phone's Web browser so that you can click through to buy the movie's ring tones and wallpaper.

That kind of 24/7 advertising engagement -- on a phone, no less -- may sound like a nightmare. But what if you could determine the kinds of products you get pitched? Or when your flight gets canceled in a faraway airport, text messages pop up for the best hotel deals in town? No random insurance ads or airline deals for trips to places you never visit.

Best of all: Watch or read the custom ads, and your phone minutes are free.

For big cell carriers, that's the real nightmare. And it may be coming in the form of a Google phone.

Wireless-industry consultants and marketing executives with knowledge of Google's plans say it has been showing prototypes of a new phone to handset manufacturers and network operators for a couple of months.

Its plans have been kept top-secret, but Google (GOOG, news, msgs) is expected to tap a company on the Pacific Rim that specializes in mobile design and manufacturing to build a handset to its specs. Google could then apply its expertise in operating software and user applications, says Paul Catalano, a partner at consultancy RelevantC Business.

Google officials won't talk about phones, and industry sources don't expect one before the second half of 2008.

The next channel for information

Still, Google has made it clear it has an interest in wireless. It is experimenting with wireless broadband networks in a couple of U.S. cities. In August, CEO Eric Schmidt announced his intention to participate in a federal auction early next year of the sort of radio spectrum that would help pull off a phone service.

Google officials won't talk about phones, and industry sources don't expect one before the second half of 2008.

So far only a few outfits in Europe and the United States have dabbled with ways to serve up ad-based service. Most, like Virgin Mobile USA, have limited control over ad delivery because their service runs over a network leased from one of the big players. Moreover, there are good reasons that advertising accounts for less than 1% of phone company revenues: Consumers remain skittish about ads on their phone. Networks and handsets are only now getting sophisticated enough to deliver colorful, location-specific ads.

And Verizon Communications (VZ, news, msgs), AT&T (T, news, msgs) and T-Mobile have no interest in giving up their fat subscription fees.

That equation goes out the window, though, once you combine Google's financial heft with its ultrasophisticated ability to target ads to specific customers.

"The day is coming when wireless users will experience nirvana scenarios -- mobile ads tied to your individual behavior, what you are doing and where you are," says Linda Barrabee, a wireless analyst at researcher Yankee Group.

Google and advertisers drool over the growth potential in wireless. The more than 2 1/2 billion phones in use worldwide exceed the number of personal computers and TVs combined.

Google recently announced a Web program aimed at advertisers who have created sites for display on cell phones and other handheld devices. Like its online ad network, Google's AdSense for Mobile delivers ads relevant to the advertiser's mobile audience.

"The sheer volume of users across the globe makes mobile the next channel for information," says Dilip Venkatachari, the director of product management for Google's mobile team.

Why stop there? The core of Google's online ad strategy has always been to help advertisers target their ads so they fit like spandex tights with user interests. Employing technologies that figure out where callers are and where they're headed boosts advertising prices by 50%, according to studies by RelevantC Business.

A number of existing strategies by smaller companies offer a glimpse into how Google might play its wireless hand, once all the cards have been dealt.

Play the games, earn minutes

Blyk, a wireless startup that made its debut in Britain on Sept. 24, offers free mobile phone calls and text messages for people 16 to 24 who agree to let companies such as L'Oréal, McDonald's (MCD, news, msgs) and Coca-Cola (KO, news, msgs) send text ads to their handsets.

Blyk leases space on European carrier Orange's network in Britain, but it operates its own billing and marketing system. That lets it retain full control of valuable customer information and avoid sharing ad revenue with the carrier. Users fill out detailed information about their lifestyles, areas of interest and brand preferences. Those who agree to receive tailored ads get 43 minutes per month of free mobile voice service and 217 free text messages.

In the United States, a service from Virgin Mobile called Sugar Mama offers subscribers a chance to earn free minutes if they agree to view tailored ads. As of August, more than 425,000 people had signed up. They can choose to have text ads in the form of quizzes and games sent to a phone a couple of times a week; play the games and you earn minutes.

They are calling him the million dollar man. Jason Calacanis recently revealed in his blog that he is on track to earn a million dollars from AdSense over the year ahead.

And if that number doesn’t wake you up and have you sitting on the edge of your seat, consider for a moment that he reached this level in less than a year. His company only started using AdSense in September 2004.

Calacanis runs Weblogs Inc., a network dedicated to creating trade weblogs across niche industries. And he’s quickly proven that AdSense is a credible advertising partner.

I run a norwegian site called http://www.linker.no. The main focus on the site is to manage all my favourite links in one place and give the visitors my best site tips on the Net.

The second focus on this site is to get visitors from search enignes into the site for a certain topic and lead them to nice sites.

How to get money for running this site?

I tried many ways to get money, but found google Adsense to be easiest way.

What I did wrong when placing the ads

My first mistake was to place the ads away from the content. About 2% of all visitors clicked on the google ads, but I wanted more.

This is what I did:

1. I made a Custom palette with my site's own colors. Background-color, text-color and link-color. This made the ads more blended into the site.

2. I moved the ads from the right section of site to the middle. Firstly at the top of the page, secondly I places them inline of the articles leading text and the main text.

3. Waited...

4. Got the site's click-rates up to 10-15 %.

This means that 10-15% of all visitors clicks an ad. The only problem on this norwegian sites is that the ads itself vary on relevant quality. Norway is a small market, You may do better of on a international site with more relevant ads. Good luck!

You heard me right, There is no Google Adsense Magic Package! I know there are so many success stories of Google Adsense Publishers making waves online. The stories are quite interesting and tempting. Savvy online marketers are using such story to sell software and courses which they claim can reproduce such success stories overnight. Newbie Online Entrepreneurs are dreaming of becoming millionaires via Google AdSense publishing. They have heard the success story, they want their own share of the pie, but they want it now, not later.

Don't Get Caught With Google Adsense Click Fraud

Many web site owners are getting their Google Adsense account terminated when they have done nothing wrong to deserve the punishment. Considering the money that they are getting from Adsense, they would certainly want to get back into it.

Almost everyone has probably heard of AdSense by now, if not then I am pretty sure you have seen AdSense and may have not even known what it was. To explain AdSense, I must first tell you a little about ‘ AdWords ‘, Adwords is a Pay-Per-Click (PPC) advertising system that is available through Google the search engine. You create a small text ad, which is placed on Google’s search result pages, the ads match your websites subject or content. You bid or set a fee that you are willing to pay Google every time someone clicks on your ad, this is a great way to get highly targeted traffic that can turn into sales, subscribers, or whatever you are trying to achieve with your website traffic.

Now that I have explained Adwords, I can now tell you about AdSense. AdSense makes it possible for website owners to earn money by simply letting Google place ads on their web pages. AdSense ads can be either text or images, the ads can be altered to blend into the webpages, so they don’t make your site look junky or poorly designed. AdSense ads are highly relevant to the content of most webpages, for instance if you place AdSense ads on a webpage that sells Coins, you will get ads about selling coins or other coin related subjects. Every time a website visitor clicks on one of the AdSense ads on your webpage, you earn money, and every month after your first balance reaches one hundred dollars, Google will send you a check or you can have the money deposited into your checking account. The AdSense program is a great way to earn extra money if you have a website, it’s easy to make a few dollars every day, and some folks are making thousands of dollars per month doing it.

When I first started Adsense, I placed the ads on my webpages and it wasn’t very long until I had made a small amount of money, a few days later my account balance had grown even more. I was pretty happy, but I thought to myself, after reading a lot of articles, I am not making nearly as much money as others are making with AdSense, something must be wrong. Then I thought, maybe my website doesn’t get the traffic that the others are getting ? I chatted with a lot of people on the internet that were in the program, and I discovered that the amount of visitors I get, was higher than some of the traffic they receive. You may think that 200 - 400 unique visitors a day is low for website traffic, you are very wrong, the average website gets a lot less per day, especially if your website is only a few months old or is not optimized for the search engines, or it’s subject matter has a very low search demand.

If my website was getting a nice amount of traffic or visitors, why was my AdSense earnings so low ? The first thing that I discovered that was wrong was ‘ adsense ad placement ‘, that’s right, you have to study each webpage’s layout that you plan on placing the ads on. Wherever your webpage has sections or areas that grab and hold the visitors attention, this is a prime area to place a section of AdSense ads, in other words, place the ads on your webpages where folks will notice them. We are currently allowed to place up to 3 different AdSense ad sections or groups on each webpage. I found after some testing that the best places for my ads are, just under the title or sub-title, near the middle of the page, and near the end or bottom of my page. If you place one section of AdSense ads near the top of your webpage, folks entering your site will probably notice the ads, and if they scroll down a ways and theres more ads, that increases the odds that they will notice them also. Probably the best place to place one section of ads is at the bottom of your webpages, right after your last bit of text or interesting reading, but make sure you place the ads before any other links, because when visitors are ready to leave your site, they may leave by clicking on one of your ads, earning you money, and if you have other links showing before your ads, they may leave your site by clicking on one of them. So after I studied the layout of all my webpages, I went back through and repositioned the AdSense ads, almost immediately I noticed my earnings increased.

I left my webpages alone, and about three months later I received my first check in the mail, it wasn’t a lot of money but still for really doing no physical work I was very glad to get it. My earnings slowly started getting better and better after that first check, the next month I received another check, then the following month I got another and so on. After having been in the AdSense program for about 8 months, and chatting with more folks who were also in the program I found that my earnings were still low compared to some other people.

I then discovered another method that increased my earnings even more. I noticed that my ads stood out from the rest of my webpages text and content. I had always thought, I should make my ads a different color than my webpages background so folks would notice my ads, and click on them, I was totally wrong. Almost everyone that has been on the internet for any length of time, has become so accustomed to seeing banners and other flashy ads that almost everyone now has what is called ‘ad blindness’, that is, when they visit a site they are automatically turned off or they ignore anything that looks like an ad. I used the Adsense editor and I changed my ads background and border colors so they matched the background color of my webpages, and I changed the text color of the ads so they matched the text color of my webpages content. The ads blended in very well, to me they were barely noticeable from the rest of my webpage, but right away the number of clicks on the ads increased, and the earnings went up even more.

I left my webpages alone and for another couple months my earnings stayed about the same, I was content with the results, but my earnings were still not as good as some of the other folks who received roughly the same amount of traffic that I did. Then I found out that they had done something else to their AdSense ads, something that made the ads seem to really get peoples attention, they were placing images near the ads, it seemed adding images made the ads look unique and it helped make the amount of clicks on them rise. So I searched the internet and I found some little icons and images that matched the content of my webpages, and near where the Adsense ads were shown, I displayed the images by adding a simple html image tag. I asked google if adding the images was within the AdSense rules, and I was advised that they were fine as long as they didn’t make folks click on the ads, by this I mean, you cannot have a flashing sign that says, ‘ click these ads ‘, or you shouldn’t have a scantily dressed girl pointing to the ads saying ‘ make me happy - click here ‘ or stuff like that, just make some nice little images that pertain to your webpages content.

The next couple months or so, my earnings still continued rising slowly. By this time, besides my regular webpages I had been working on several BLOG’s pertaining to different subjects, so I thought I might as well place AdSense ads on all of my blogs also and make even more money. For a couple weeks my earnings went up quite a bit, and I was very happy, then all of a sudden, just like someone turning off a switch, my AdSense earnings plummeted. I was now making in a day, what I had made when I first joined the program, what the heck happened I thought to myself ? My traffic was still slowly rising, the number of clicks was rising, but for some strange reason, the earnings per click, (EPC) had dropped a lot, it was horrible.

Then I learned that Google had introduced a new feature or system into the AdSense program, called ’smart pricing’, ’smart pricing’ automatically adjusts the cost of an ad click. Using Googles system of analyzing AdSense data, if it shows that a click from one of your webpages is less likely to turn into an online sale, or other business result for the Ad publisher, the amount you earn per click in AdSense is greatly reduced. When ’smart pricing’, was introduced, some AdSense users saw their EPC drop to as low as 3 cents a click, where before ’smart pricing’, that same click might of earned them a dollar or much more, this was quite a drastic drop in earnings. What is horrible about ’smart pricing’, besides the earnings loss to AdSense users, is that one site or webpage can trigger it, and once triggered by that one webpage, it effects your entire account and every webpage you have will now earn substantially less per click. Remember awhile back when I had added AdSense Ads to my BLOG’s, that seemed to be what had triggered smart pricing for me. The BLOG’s were on numerous subjects, but they were not business or real professional sites, so hardly any business results such as sales, occurred from folks clicking the ads on these sites. After I removed the Adsense ads from the BLOG’s, it took about a week, then I noticed that the EPC was once again climbing back up, yes the ’smart pricing’, spell had been broken.

If you are thinking about trying AdSense, or if you are already in it, beware of the smart pricing curse, or if it has already effected your earnings, try removing AdSense ads from your webpages a few pages at a time, the smart-pricing system is evaluated each week, so it will take a few days to see if you have removed ads from the page(s) that triggered it.

5 Adsense Tips for higer CTR and revenue

Google Adsense is one of the most widely used income generating program on the web. Most of the blogs and websites survive on income from Google adsense. As long as Google keeps its adsense model running, we’ll see a lot of adsense related blogs and websites online.

But not all blogs or websites make money with adsense, there is a science and method to increasing adsense revenues by tweaking adsense units and ads. A slight change to your adsense units can result in anywhere between 10 % to 25 % increase in your CTRs (click through rates), thus resulting an increase in adsense revenues

Here are a few Adsense tips that will help you increase your CTRs with a slight modification in Adsense unit colours :

1) Design your website to highlight adsense:
Every website is different in terms of design and theme, as a website or blog owner you need to ensure that the colours of the adsense units blend into the design and theme of your site or blog. You need to ensure that the look of your page ensures attention of your ads. Many websites have strong graphic elements that catch the eye – usually at the expense of the Adsense units. If you are using adsense units, be judicious in the selection of the fonts, font size, colours, images, ad tables and other visual aspects of your website. Try to draw subtle attention to your adsense units, make them the star of your website or blog.

2) Make the border go :
- By opting to remove the border of the adsense units, you will increase the CTR of the ads by more than double the existing click rate. Removing the border makes teh ad look less like an ad and more like content. Remember the more your adsense unit looks like an ad the less chances of your reader clicking on it. That’s the reason text based ad do better than image ads on adsense.

3 ) Use Three way matching :
- You’ ll need to tweak your adsense units on your website and blog to test for the optimum size and optimum ad units that increase your adsense revenues. The three way matching uses a combination of titles, text and background to make the ads more effective for clicks. Too make different ad sizes and units will only clutter your webpages and confuse your visitors. Try to make your ads not look like ads, ensure that the ad units blend into the content and design on your website or blog.

4 ) Blue is the best colour :
- To ensure have optimum clicks for your ads, you need to ensure that the ad are the same colour as the text on the rest of your page and the background matching the background colour of your web page or blog.

But what about the actual colour of the URL link for the ad, the line that the user is actually going to click ? What colour should that be ? The link should be blue in colour, the online users have come to believe that the links on the webpages are blue in colour and people are more likely to click on a blue link than a link in any other colour.

The line in your adsense code that sets the colour of your link is the one that says :
Google_colour_link = “#colour”;
“#colour” is the hexadecimal number for the colour you want to use. You should make sure that the number is #0000FF

Keep your links blue and you can experience an increase in click through rates of as high as 25 %.

5 ) Matching the URL display colour :
- You can change the colour of the adsense Title to attact the users attention, but according to Google’s adsense policy you still have to display the URL of the ads, but you dont have to display it in a way that people can see it. Adsense experiments have show that the user is less interested to click on the URL’s ,if thats the case then as an adsense publisher your income from adsense will not be high. One legitimate trick to make the click through link less obtrusive is to change the URL display colour to match the text description on your site or blog. Now the link will blend in with the text and the eye will be drawn in on the hyperlink instead of the URL.

Note that the 728 x 90 leaderboard and the 468 x 60 banner do not display the URL line by Google’s design. You will not get in trouble by not displaying the URL for these ad units, its just the way it is.

Yes you can. First though I should probably explain that hubpages.com is a free website where you an register and publish articles, called hubs. You can make money with AdSense, and some other affiliates, but this article is about making money with AdSense on HubPages. AdSense are the small "classified" ads you see all over the web - as a publisher you get paid every time someone clicks on those ads.

HubPages allows you to publish absolutely everything - but if you want to make money you will need to be a little bit clever, assuming you don't want to be excited about making $10 after six months that! There are three key elements to making money on HubPages: keyword selection, back links and content. Yes that's the order of importance too, so lets start with the most important first

Choosing The Right Keywords
If you chose the wrong keywords, or worse, none at all, you will, almost by definition fail. I have a hub that is popular and gets a good amount of search traffic. But the keyword is only worth 5c a click - on a good day! Lesson learned. You need to find a keyword which pays reasonably, I prefer a cost per click of at least $8 a click - remembering that I will only see maybe $2 of that. I also don't want to much competition - I check who is at the top of the search engine rankings - and if its too hard I move on. You also share revenue on HubPages - you will 60% of the page impressions so take that into account too.

Back links are Key
Once you have written your hub you will probably delighted to find it indexed in Google within a day or two. But that's not good enough - you still need to build anchored back links to your hub. Link from your blogs, from other hubs, from EzineArticles! Where ever you can find a do-follow place to drop your anchored link - do it!

Writing a Hub
You need to be writing original content for HubPages, duplicate content is just a waste of time as it rarely gets indexed. You need to have enough content - but not too much - I aim for between 600 and 1000 words. You need to be useful to your reader. Small comment. Still the on-line things for lazy people who dont want to go out of home are high paid.

Match your AdSense to your website:

You want your AdSense ads to appear as seamless as possible. Your goal is to match every aspect of your AdSense ads to the theme of your website. What you want to do is remove the borders from your AdSense ads and match the background color of the ad to your website. Additionally, you want to match the color of the AdSense links to the rest of the links on your website plus choose an ad format that makes the ads look seamless.

For example, if your web site has a white background and the default color of your hypertext links is blue you will want to remove the border from your AdSense, make the background white, choose either a square or a rectangle as your ad format instead of a skyscraper or banner, and yep you guessed it… make the links blue.

Placement Matters:

Where you place your AdSense ads is just as important as how they look. Luckily, there are only a few concepts that you need to worry about in order to increase your click through rate.

•The more white space around your ads the better

•The closer to the top of the page the better

•The closer the left of the page the better
